Modest Monday: Proverbs 4:23 A Pure Heart

Proverbs 4:23

Hello, my belles

Well today I decided to continue talking about modesty and how it starts on the inside.  A lot of times people think modesty is about being covered, no makeup, or not being extravagant looking but that is not all it is. It is about being a person of character, integrity, and having a pure heart.  In order to have those qualities a person must  guard their heart.

Guarding your heart means that you do not have any heart conditions because you protect your heart. I do not mean an medical condition but whether what we believe or feel. One heart condition a person can have is a prideful heart.

A person with a prideful heart is puffed up in what they have. This can be a person that is prideful in their looks, wealth, intelligence, or social life. These people do good things. But they only care about how people perceive them more so than caring about others. A person like this  is vain and often talks about how they look or what they own. They spend countless hours and money on their appearance. Sometimes they may start to dress or behave in a non modest fashion   in order to fit in.

They often choose their friends or associates based on how they look, finances, or intelligence. This person often calls others ugly, poor,  or bullies ones that do not fit their perfection They can also become jealous of others if they perceive them as a threat. A person with a prideful heart needs to realise that if it was not for God they would have not have the things that they worship so much!

Scriptures on Vanity

Psalm 62:10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Philippians 2:3New International Version (NIV)Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves

Another heart condition is a bitter hearted person. This type of person is one that has been wronged but wants revenge. But instead of hurting the other person they are only hurting themselves. People often say that a person like this wants to poison someone else but drinks the person themselves. This person is often hurting but goes around hurting others. A bitter person is also negative like just like the vain person. This person can also be deceitful and lie about how they are being treated by others. A bitter person fails to realise that those who have wrong them will reap what they sow. A bitter person need to realize that operating in forgiveness will do better for them than to seek revenge. To keep from bitter do not be easily offended by others or how they treat you.

Scripture on Bitterness and Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:31

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Matthew 6:15

But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Luke 6:45New International Version (NIV)

The one that inspired me to write this post is the broken hearted person. This person may have been offended like the bitter person but may be sad about the event instead of  angry. I  think this heart condition is more common than most. There are lot of people that have faced disappointed or rejected by someone they loved.

I know one person that has been rejected by a fiance. She is very broken hearted but there were signs that she should never have given her heart to him. He was slowly depleting her physically and spiritually. She has lost a lot of weight and often sick because it. She has also given up her position in the church because of him. She does not act the same anymore. These are signs that a person is not for you if they take away from you  instead of adding. Guard your heart by not letting in people that are bad for you.

Guarding your heart is important because you do not want to develope any of these heart conditions that cause to do wrong instead of good.  If we allow evil into our hearts it would start to show on the outside. The way we dress, talk, or act would change. A scripture in Luke exemplifies that.

45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(A)

So guarding your heart is one key part of being modest because it is our life source.

Keep in my mind guard your heart like a soldier guards a fort. Keep all negativity out of your heart because your heart affects your whole being.
